Egypt will continue their quest for a first title in 16 years when they face Senegal in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals at the Tangier Grand Stadium on Wednesday, January 14.

The Pharaohs have won the tournament a record seven times, but their last success came back in 2010 on the back of a dominant spell which had also seen them lift the trophy in 2006 and 2008.

The North African giants fell on leaner times in the years that followed, failing to even qualify for the 2012, 2013 and 2015 editions before reaching the final again in 2017 and 2021.

Hossam Hassan's side are still unbeaten in Morocco, having won four of their opening five matches and signalling their title intentions with a 3-2 victory over defending champions Ivory Coast in the quarter-finals.

Their AFCON record against the Lions of Teranga does not make for good reading, however, as Egypt have only come out on top twice and found themselves on the losing side three times, most recently in the 2021 final which saw them go down 4-2 on penalties after a 0-0 draw (AET).

Hassan admitted that preparation was key to defeating the Elephants, although he wasn't happy that they conceded two goals and insisted they cannot afford to make the same mistakes against Senegal.

"Since we arrived, I've always said that every match is like a final for us. That's how we approach every game. Every match is different, and we adapt to each opponent," he said in the post-match press conference.

"I'm very happy about our qualification. The players gave everything, and I'm proud of them. Our preparation made the difference.

"We knew they were the reigning champions. We respected them and put a game plan in place, which worked today. It's true we also made mistakes in the match that cost us two goals, but we scored three. However, we will correct these shortcomings for the next matches."
