Golf basics

A game or round of golf is played by completing 18 holes of a course in a given order. Each hole features a teeing ground, a fairway and a putting green with a hole. Holes will also often feature various obstacles or traps that can include pits of sand (sand bunkers) or bodies of water (water hazards). If during play a ball is sunk in a water hazard, the player is required to take a penalty shot (add one shot to their score) and play from the side of the hazard. Landing in a sand bunker does not carry a penalty. However, players are required to play their ball out of the bunker before continuing.

During a round, players use clubs to hit a small white ball from the teeing ground of each hole, over the fairway, onto the putting green, and finally into the corresponding hole. The player who manages to sink his or her ball into each hole with the fewest number of shots (instances the ball is struck with a player’s club) wins.

The origins of golf

Although the origins of gold are disputed, most agree that the modern game originated in Scotland. The first written record of the game is a notice from James II banning the game in 1457. In 1502, the ban was lifted when the king’s successor, James IV who would become the first recorded purchaser of golf equipment (a set of clubs created by a Scottish bow-maker).

The first dedicated golf course was Musselburgh Links in East Lothian, Scotland. It is believed that the first rounds of golf were played at the course as early as 1574. It is, however, another course that is considered to be the home of golf. The Old Course at St Andrews is hallowed ground for the golfing faithful. The ground is home to the first standard 18-hole course after 22 holes we modified to the now standard 18 in 1764. Since then, rules and equipment has changed and improved but much of the game itself has remained unchanged.
